Although there is another great mind, Immanuel Velikovsky who elaborated that indeed, such hypotheses of the polar shifts in 2012 is possible, what with another planet coming so near ours, and causing impact that would trigger polar shifts on Earth. He also predicted that a phenomenon such as this will even prompt major disturbances such as gigantic tidal waves; not to mention the fatal earthquakes. But then, despite these arguments being supported by specific events of the past, they were dismissed by the scientific populace.
