Will A 2012 Magnetic Polar Reversal And Polar Shift End The World

There has been so much hype about the imminent 2012 magnetic polar reversal recently that people are scared out of their wits, even NASA has been bothered with emails ranging from downright nutty to extremely scary. But what really is thedeal about the magnetic polar reversal and what is polar shift?

For the record, magnetic polar reversal and polar shift are two very distinct phenomena. So what precisely are polar shift and magnetic pole reversal, and should we worry?

{Polar Shift}

Polar shift has been contemplated by amateur and maverick psychics, end of the world fanatics, astrologers, serious scientists and geophysicists alike. In the past, it is nothing more than a theory that is supposed to explain the drastic climate changes that have happened in the past; today it is at the heart of serious scientific studies.

In theory, polar shift is triggered by uneven weight distribution on the surface of the earth. Early theorists suggest that this could be caused by the formation of the massive blocks of ice in either North Pole or South Pole. This could then lead to a disturbance on the planet’s axis.

If the imbalance on the weight is sufficient to tilt the Earth, some theorists suggest that the planet might continue rotating on its axis until the land and ice masses are redistributed near the equator. This results in the change of the location of the continents, possibly causing the arctic to exchange places with the equator. Theoretically, this movement will happen at a rate faster than what is normally projected for plate tectonics, which are in constant motion.

Although it is interesting to have entire continents switch places, this process can lead to drastic changes in the climate of the Earth.

This theory has been fueling interest since 1842 when Joseph Adhémar, a famous French mathematician, proposed the idea that the Earth could tilt on its axis if enough polar caps eroded. This in turn will change the center of the Earth’s gravity and will cause catastrophes that could spell the end of mankind.

{Magnetic Pole Reversal}

Oftentimes confused with polar shift theory, magnetic pole reversal is a theory that is actually backed with credible evidence. This is, in fact, a widely accepted theory within the scientific community because of the abundance of evidence to prove it.

Magnetic pole reversal is a phenomenon in which the magnetic poles switch, turning the North Pole, South, and vice-versa. In this theory, the Earth’s core can cause serious changes in the planet’s magnetic field. This, according to experts, can result to changes in the activities of the Aurora Borealis and other strange phenomenons. Scientists fear, however that this can also cause the magnetic shield of the Earth to weaken, eventually causing heavenly bodies and cosmic rays to penetrate and possibly destroy life on the planet. Overall, though, life will continue as it is.

According to experts, polar shift and magnetic pole reversals happen not over a few days’ or hours’ time but over a period of thousands of years. 2012 magnetic polar reversal, therefore, could mean nothing more than another doomsday prophecy, but no one really knows for sure?
